After Cain killed his brother Abel, God heard Abel’s blood cry out from the ground. And even though Adam is Cain’s biological father, it was Cain’s Heavenly Father who delivered the consequences for what he had done. God said, “So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth.” Genesis 4:11-12 And then Cain was cast out to Nod, a place east of Eden - where he would wander with no home or no father! Cain was afraid and said to God, “anyone who finds me will kill me.” But the Lord said, “Whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the Lord set a mark on Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him.” Genesis 4:13-15 First, isn’t it obvious? Whatever God says is the law of the land. If we don’t like it, then “oh well!” God is sovereign. Everything created came from God's mouth - including us! And since God is alive and well, He is still speaking and carrying out His plan to restore Eden to Mount Zion and the New Jerusalem. Second, God’s blessings and curses typically carry a double portion, or “a sevenfold.” God said, if anyone kills Cain, God’s vengeance will be sevenfold. That means that if a human decided to inflict punishment or revenge for the injury or wrong that Cain had done, then they would endure a punishment delivered by God that would be greater than seven times the intensity of what they had done! God himself is the final judge! After Cain left his parents, and moved to Nod, East of Eden, he had children with his wife. From Enoch, Cain’s first-born son, to Lamech, his last-born son, were seven generations. And it seems the seventh generation was farthest from God. Lamech took two wives, became like a “god” and said “hear my voice.” According to scripture, his exact words were, “Wives of Lamech, listen to my speech! For I have killed a man for wounding me, Even a young man for hurting me. If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.” Genesis 4:23-24 I got to admit, when I read this, I almost shit my pants! Holy Spirit revealed to me what it meant. I have read this passage a hundred times, and not once, until today, did I notice what took place! But Holy Spirit has been opened my eyes, Lamech, born from the line of Cain, became like a little “god” - and it only took 7 generations for a man to behave in complete foolishness. How did Lamech think it was wise to take two wives, when God clearly said “a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” Genesis 2:24 How did Lamech decide that he would be avenged seventy times sevenfold? When did a man decide that he could administer a punishment that was God’s to give? And most importantly, when did Lamech think that what he says goes? Did he really think his words create, like God's? Perhaps Lamech was so far removed from God, that he only heard his own voice speaking in his head? He must have thought he had complete control to take God’s place and make it his own. Lamech Says - this should be a lesson for us all!
