Is it hard to believe
that God is sensory? I mean, he's not a physical being, is he? Sensation is a process where the body takes in a physical stimulation of a substantial something. We have sensory receptors and special neurons that respond to specific stimulation, creating potential action. We have five main senses that we all know: vision and hearing, taste and touch, and smell - which is the most emotional sense of all. We also have sensory systems that help with body balance and position, a temperature sense known as thermoception. We also have body movement, known as kinesthesia, and pain receptors that can hurt like hell. We have an absolute threshold that is defined by a minimum stimulus that can be detected 50% of the time. Our sensitivity can be quite amazing - like when we can see a candle flame from 30 miles away. And under quiet conditions, our ear can detect - from 20 miles away, the tick of a clock. A message below the threshold is said to be subliminal it's when our body receives it, but we aren't aware. How we interpret what's been let in, is what is known as our perception. Perception is different because it entails that we make sense of the information that has been inhaled - and it affects how we interact with our world. Knowledge and experience gives rise to our thoughts, this is probably why God says, "Your ways are not my ways, and your thoughts are not my thoughts." In Psalm 115, this is what is says, "Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him." But the man who make idols, from silver and gold - will never know the mysteries our God desires to unfold. These idols have mouths, but cannot speak, and eyes, but cannot see. They have ears, but cannot hear, and noses, but cannot smell. They have hands, but cannot feel, and feet, but cannot walk, nor can they utter a sound with their throats. It's easy to see, in this imagery, God reveals his own sensory mystery. He is a living, breathing God whose lungs do not stop. His heart circulates his blood with unfailing love. Do you remember what God did when Noah made his burnt offering, right after the flood? God smelled the pleasing aroma, and then he said, "I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man's heart is evil from youth. Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done. While the earth remains, seed time and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.” Genesis 8:21-22 This is an example of how God is built, he uses senses and perceptions to express his own heart. This is also what happens when his Spirit comes in, to comfort and guide the faithful hearts of his men. He opens our ears, and widens our eyes to take in the information he wants us to see, and to hear. I mean, for real... in our own power, how would we ever know to discern the hour? It's only through the Spirit that we can come to know him. It's only through the Spirit that we can find true wisdom. It's only through the Spirit that we can stay pure - by listening and following his promising Word. With clean hearts, we become renewed. This means he gives us new receptors to identify the truth. And as our mind becomes transformed, we outgrow these physical forms. Our spiritual self matures, until we become fully grown. “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches.” Revelation 3:22
