So far in my journey
through the Book of Genesis, I can’t remember a time so emotionally laden as Chapters 43-45. I almost thought I was reading the Psalms of David! I mean, listen to these verses: “Now his heart yearned for his brother (Benjamin) so Joseph made haste and sought somewhere to weep.” Genesis 43:30 “And we said to my Lord, ‘We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, who is young; his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother’s children, and his father loves him.’” Genesis 44:20 “But if you take this one also from me, and calamity befalls him, you shall bring down my gray hair with sorrow to the grave.’” Genesis 44:29 “Then Joseph could not restrain himself before all those who stood by him, and he cried out, “Make everyone go out from me!” So no one stood with him while Joseph made himself known to his brothers. And he wept aloud, and the Egyptians and the house of Pharaoh heard it.” Genesis 45:1-2 “And Joseph said to his brothers, “Please come near to me.” So they came near. Then he said: “I am Joseph your brother, whom you sold into Egypt. But now, do not therefore be grieved or angry with yourselves because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life.” Genesis 45:4-5 “Then he fell on his brother Benjamin’s neck and wept, and Benjamin wept on his neck. Moreover he kissed all his brothers and wept over them, and after that his brothers talked with him.” Genesis 45:14-15 “And they told him, saying, “Joseph is still alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt.” And Jacob’s heart stood still, because he did not believe them.” Genesis 45:26 Can you imagine being so overwhelmed with shock that your heart actually stands still? “But when they told him all the words which Joseph had said to them, and when he saw the carts which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of Jacob their father revived.” Genesis 45:27 Hearing about Joseph and all that God had done through him actually caused Jacob’s heart to beat again. Now I can’t think of any emotion that can cause a person’s heart to come alive than pure, unadulterated love. And this kind of love can only be experienced by someone who has witnessed the hand of God move. This kind of resurrection only happens when our spirits of sorrow suddenly move from utter darkness into His glorious light; or when our sin-covered souls shake off the spiritual filth and are shown mercy and grace. When we experience God’s goodness and see first-hand what it means to be blessed - that my friend is when our life really begins; even when face temporary death!
